Some laughter (and tears) for the August recess

One FCNL staff person was so excited (or depressed) about this clip from the Colbert Report that he sent it to me twice to get up on the blog. So take some time from your busy August schedule of relaxing with lemonade next to a lake to enjoy this video. I wonder how Congressman Westmoreland would respond to FCNL's Questions for Candidates?

We should eliminate The Department of Education?! Strange words from someone who's so proud to represent a district with 'strong family values.'

Just for comparison, according to FCNL's budget report (http://www.fcnl.org/budget/) only 3 cents out of every 2007 tax dollar goes to fund education, employment, social services and community services combined while 43 cents goes to military spending. Somehow, getting rid of our entire public school system doesn't seem quite worth it.

Also, in addition to being the training grounds of Colin Powell and George Marshall, Fort Benning is the location of SOA/WHINSEC which has trained (and continues to train) some of the worst human rights violators in the Latin America with US tax dollars (http://www.soaw.org/article.php?id=205).

I have to say though, downtown Columbus is an amazingly cute area. Too bad that their congressperson leaves so much to be desired, though I guess we should be glad he's not writing legislation.
